Louis Waterman of Brooklyn, New York, invented the first capillary feed in fountain pens. Today the famous Waterman pens are recognized for high quality.

In 1884, Louis Waterman was an insurance broker. One day a new pen leaked all over a contract he was trying to sell someone. He wound up losing the insurance sale. But Waterman went back to the drawing board and perfected a new fountain pen and had it patented. He became very successful with his new invention.

Sometimes success does not come until much later in one’s life. For some, the early years hold failure after failure, frustration after frustration. Many people get accustomed to the mediocrity of their lives, the average results they produce, thus thinking that real success is far beyond their reach. Then there are those who get a magical wake-up call and achieve success beyond all imagination. What these very special achievers did not realize early on was this: Greatness was always within them. Greatness is within the reach of each one of us.

If greatness is truly within the reach of each of us, then why does it not come forth in some for many years, or not at all? I believe that in some great achievers there must be complete failure in their lives first. They must reach the end of their rope before something triggers the “desire button” and turns on that all-consuming desire to succeed far beyond most others around them.

The real lesson is this: The desire button is deep inside all of us. It will never ever be activated in many people because, quite honestly, it is just too easy to leave it untouched and go through life with an inactive desire button. That is not to say that many people with inactive desire buttons don’t do well in life. Many individuals lead comfortable lives. They may earn a fair wage and raise lovely families. But my point is this: If those same people would only activate that all-important desire button, they would achieve phenomenal success unreached by many. There are many people who activated the desire button later in life. Let’s look at a couple:

There was Milo C. Jones, the founder of the famous Jones Pork Sausages. He was a middle-aged, poor Wisconsin farmer who suddenly became paralyzed and bedridden. It was only then that he used his mind and the physical assistance of his family to start the Jones Pork Sausage business. It was a hit.

Ray Kroc was a milkshake-mixer salesman, barely able to make ends meet. He used to sell to restaurants. He befriended the McDonald brothers at their one small hamburger stand and convinced them to allow him to franchise their business. In his late fifties, Kroc turned the one-stand operation into a multimillion-dollar business.

Welcome every morning with a smile. Look on the new day as another special gift from the Creator. Another golden opportunity to complete what you were unable to finish yesterday. Be a self-starter. Let your first hour set the theme of success and positive action that is certain to echo through your entire day.
